11th ICAAP conference reporting and newspaper management

During the 11th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (11th ICAAP), held in Bangkok from 18 to 22 November 2013, Inis Communication partnered with Citizen News Service (CNS) to produce a daily on-site newspaper covering sessions and issues around the event.  Eleven experienced health reporters from India, Vietnam, Philippines, and Myanmar were deployed for on-site reporting throughout the conference, with a team of three from Inis providing editing, graphic design and coordination support.  Four issues of the newspaper were distributed each morning to ICAAP participants covering a broad range of HIV-related issues and concerns from around the region. Communications support to Experience Sharing Forum

CNS provided media and communications support to the Experience Sharing Forum, organized by the Institute for Reproductive Health (IRH) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to share findings and experiences from the integration and scale up of Standard Days Method (SDM) and Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) services in India (July 2013).

Lung Health Communication initiative

With support from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), CNS is facilitating a year-long communication initiative on lung health that includes hosting Webinars for CNS Health Writers' Network members from countries in Asia and Africa; supporting health writers to develop news articles for their local media agencies; facilitating a social media campaign and organizing Media Dialogue on specific lung health issues; among other activities. Lung health and women; Asthma; Multidrug-Resistant TB (MDR-TB); tobacco control; COPD; Childhood Pneumonia; TB-HIV co-infection; diabetes; are among the key issues in-focus.

Documenting best practices and lessons learnt in rolling out MDR-TB services

With support from Eli Lilly/ Lilly MDR-TB Partnership in India, we are currently doing a project to document best practices and lessons learnt in rolling out prevention, treatment, care and support services related to MDR-TB in eight government and private/ non-government sites. We will also produce a photo-essay and draft priority recommendations for achieving MDR-TB related targets set by the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) of the Government of India by 2015.

Front-page of South Asian newspapers under gender lens

CNS helped conduct an initial pilot research study comprising a month-long news monitoring, aggregation and gender analysis of the front-page of prominent English newspapers in five South Asian countries (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan). The initial findings were released on 11 January 2013 (report is online here).

Consultative process to strengthen laws in sexual assault cases

CNS helped organize and facilitate an open in-person and online consultation to seek input for Justice JS Verma Committee (appointed by government of India) that sought input to strengthen laws to respond to cases of sexual violence. On behalf of Socialist Party, Lok Rajniti Manch, Humsafar – Support Centre for Women, Asha Parivar and National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM), we had organized this in-person consultation opposite Vidhan Sabha Lucknow on 28th December 2012. The recommendations (online here) were officially submitted by us to Justice Verma Committee members on 2nd January 2013.
